Living with Chromosome 15q
Early intervention is the key: The benefits of early intervention include enabling the person with chromosome 15 q to develop their own strengths, imrpve behvaioius and identify areas of weakness. However, before you begin any new program, therapy, exercise, special diet etc.
check with your physician.
Support: The IDEA organisation provides states with federal grants for early intervention programs. In order to access services, individual needs of people with chromosome 15q are assessed based on a comprehensive evaluation. The document used for evaluation is the Individual Family Service Program (IFSP). The document should describe current levels of functioning and the anticipated goals. It should also list the specific
services that will be provided.
Services : Services may include speech and language instruction, occupational therapy, physical therapy, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and psychological evaluation.
Families may also access training which may include teaching new skills, counselling to help families adapt and monitoring of programs.
For students with chromosome duplication 15q11q13 they may be eligible for special education services both within the private and public system and special education support is tailored to the student’s individual needs which would be outlined in the IFSP document.
For students aged 3 and under whose parents wish to access special education services they need to call their local Early Intervention Agency. Parents who live in America may like to contact the ARC or Easter Seals offices.
